Great, great, great Almod\u00f3var<\/b> film!!! The interlocking stories<\/b>, multiple flashbacks<\/b> and pieces of a film within the film<\/b> are frustratingly impossible to describe<\/b> but keep the film consistently intriguing. The insane plot(s)<\/b> are complex but easy to follow, even if you sometimes don't know exactly which<\/em> of them you're actually watching. The Production Design and Cinematography<\/b> are, as usual, stunningly rich and entirely plot driven.<\/b> As Stephen Holden<\/b> said better than I could in his New York Times<\/b> review, "This film is unrestrained by any need to appear realistic." Almod\u00f3var<\/b> mines classic Spanish and American thrillers and film noir<\/b> for style<\/em> but the substance<\/em><\/b> of this film is absolutely his own.<\/b> Despite frequent and obvious nods to Hitchcock and DePalma(!)<\/b> this film is still<\/em> pure Almod\u00f3var.<\/b> The beautiful, sometimes seemingly innapropriate score<\/b> which owes a debt<\/b> to the great Bernard Herrmann<\/b> is wonderful on its own. (Imagine Herrmann with flamenco guitar!) These are simply landmarks to help us navigate the thriller territory. Oh, and for laughs, too.<\/b><\/p>\n I've read that Bad Education<\/b> is about all the effects of Franco-era Catholic education on two young men. That's not really true. Child sexual abuse by a priest<\/b> and battering by another<\/b> may be what binds<\/em> these two men and drives at least a large part of the 'story' but the film is really about passion, love and, especially, art.<\/b> It examines how love and memory drive us to create<\/b> and how sometimes art is defined by the things we choose to leave a mystery. It's about our identities, how we see ourselves<\/b>, how we <\/b>want<\/em><\/b> to be remembered<\/b> and how we <\/b>are<\/em><\/b> remembered,<\/b> despite ourselves. It's about how some people's incomplete and clouded memories motivate the creation of art.<\/b> It's about a lot<\/em> of things. And it's hilarious,<\/b>too, but played completely straight.<\/b> Bad Education's comic, tabloid roots<\/b> are made completely clear in the very first scene,<\/em> so it's hard for me to understand why some folks don't see them. It's sensational<\/b> in every sense of the word, conciously and proudly so.<\/b><\/p>\n Just go see it!<\/b> If great gay filmmakers<\/b> like Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/b> don't get our support, we're gonna be left with nothing but hacks like Joel Schumacher and crap like Phantom of the Opera.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Great, great, great Almod\u00f3var film!!!
